One month after the mass massacre of Israelis perpetrated by the armed organization of Hamas, faced with the dimensions of the tragedy affecting Israelis and Palestinians and aware of the very serious responsibilities of those involved, we call for: an immediate ceasefire, respect for international law, urgent humanitarian measures, steps to protect the civilian populations in Israel and Palestine, and the release of the Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas.
The state of Israel has the right to a legitimate and secure existence, and Palestinians equally have the right to a secure state: both must be able to live in peace and in conditions of mutual respect.
We call for the start of peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, which have been suspended for far too long, based on the mutual recognition of the two peoples’ right to self-determination and on the end of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.
Finally, we call for an attitude in Italian and international public opinion that is legitimately concerned and critical, but also respectful of the history and memory of both parties involved. We strongly condemn the resurgence of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in Europe and around the world, both of which undermine the civil fabric of our societies.
